Resolving Student Complaints

A self-help checklist to assist students find the most appropriate source of help

To make sure that you are aware of your rights and responsibilities as a student read the Rules of Academic Assessment, Rules of Admission and Student Progress, Rules of Graduate Research, Rules of Registration of Graduate Research Supervisors and Ordinance 8 - Student Complaints.

1. Write to Director, Governance & Legal requesting a faculty review of decision by a Faculty Academic Progress Review Committee - see Part 6 - Rules of Admission and Student Progress

2. If dissatisfied with the decision of a Faculty Academic Progress Review Committee, see appeal provisions under Part 4 - Ordinance 8 - Student Complaints. An appeal against a decision can be lodged by writing to the Director, Governance & Legal. A Student Advocate or the Complaints Commissioner may be able to assist.

A student who has a complaint about a re-mark as a result of a review of assessment may ask that the matter be reviewed by a Student Complaints Tribunal under Part 2.2 - Ordinance 8 - Student Complaints by writing to the Director, Governance & Legal. A Student Advocate or the Complaints Commissioner may be able to assist.

2. An appeal against a decision of a Faculty Academic Progress Review Committee may be lodged by writing to the Director, Governance & Legal - see Appeal provisions - Part 4 Ordinance 8 - Student Complaints. A Student Advocate or the Complaints Commissioner may be able to assist

     

Disability matters

Contact the Disability Adviser, Student Services

1. Manager, Student Services or a Student Advocate or the Complaints Commissioner may be able to assist.

2. If still dissatisfied, a formal complaint may be lodged see Part 2 Ordinance 8 - Student Complaints.

     

Discipline matters

Head of School if academic misconduct and 'senior officer' if general misconduct (see Ordinance 9 - Student Discipline)

Discrimination and Harassment

Informal: speak to a Harassment and Discrimination Contact Officer, student counsellor, or Student Advocate

1. A student may seek a review of a decison by writing to Director, Governance & Legal requesting a faculty review by a Faculty Academic Progress Review Committee - see Part 6 - Rules of Admission and Student Progress

2. If dissatisfied with the decision of a Faculty Academic Progress Review Committee, see appeal provisions - Part 4 Ordinance 8 - Student Complaints. An appeal against a decision can be lodged by writing to the Director, Governance & Legal. A Student Advocate or the Complaints Commissioner may be able to assist.

Depending on the enrolment issue there may be two different courses of further action:

1. If the enrolment issue is an academic issue, a student may ask for a review of a decision by writing to Director, Governance & Legal requesting a faculty review by a Faculty Academic Progress Review Committee - see Part 6 - Rules of Admission and Student Progress. A Student Advocate or the Complaints Commissioner may be able to assist.

2. If the enrolment issue is an administrative issue, a student may ask that the matter be reviewed by a Student Complaints Tribunal under Part 2.2 - Ordinance 8 - Student Complaints by writing to the Director, Governance & Legal. A Student Advocate or the Complaints Commissioner may be able to assist.

3. An appeal against a decision of a Faculty Academic Progress Review Committee or a Student Complaints Tribunal can be lodged by writing to the Director, Governance & Legal, see Appeal provisions - Part 4 Ordinance 8 - Student Complaints A Student Advocate or the Complaints Commissioner may be able to assist.


  • refusing enrolment in a unit*

Exclusion: following an academic progress review*

Write to the Director, Governance & Legal requesting a faculty review by a Faculty Academic Progress Review Committee - see Clause 26 - Rules of Academic Assessment . A Student Advocate or the Complaints Commissioner may be able to assist.

If dissatisified with the decision of a Faculty Academic Progress Review Committee write to the Director, Governance & Legal to appeal the decision - see Part 4 Ordinance 8 - Student Complaints. A Student Advocate or the Complaints Commissioner may be able to assist.

     

Exclusion:
following a discipline case

Contact Governance & Legal for procedural advice, and for assistance contact a Student Advocate at the Tasmania University Union. See Appeal Provisions in Part 4 Appeals - Ordinance 9 - Student Discipline
